Sofía Araújo is one of the leading figures in European women’s padel and a player who has managed to turn her natural power into a top-level competitive tool. An absolute reference in Portugal, her name has become established among the most dangerous and respected pairs in the professional circuit.
Who she is
Born in Lisbon on November 30, 1994, Sofía Araújo has established herself as the great flagbearer of Portuguese women’s padel. Right-handed and approximately 1.70 meters tall, she usually competes on the backhand side, a position from which she can fully exploit her finishing ability, aggressiveness, and ball weight. For years, she was best known for her explosive and game-changing profile, but her competitive evolution has led her to become a much more complete, tactically mature player, ready to compete on equal terms with the world’s best. This growth has been reflected in her constant progression in the international ranking, reaching 11th place in the FIP ranking in April 2025. During this period, she also resumes her project with Marta Ortega, a partner with whom she had already achieved important results. Beyond her accomplishments on the circuit, Araújo has been the number 1 in Portugal for years and a decisive figure in promoting the visibility and development of padel in her country.
Playing style
Sofía Araújo’s padel has a clearly offensive identity. From the backhand, she seeks to dominate points with power, a heavy volley, and a lot of determination to take the net and maintain the initiative. Her smash is one of her most recognizable shots, especially when she receives comfortable balls near the net, where she makes a difference through acceleration, height of impact, and forcefulness. She also creates a lot of damage with her víbora and aggressive bandeja, resources with which she pressures, disrupts the opponent’s rhythm, and creates closing options. Over the seasons, she has added essential skills to compete at the elite level: a more reliable defense, better shot selection, greater patience in building the point, and a more refined tactical reading in moments of high demand. Physically, she conveys intensity, competitiveness, and a very marked presence on the court, qualities that allow her to endure tough matches and raise her level in high-pressure scenarios.
